If you see the message below in your WordPress Dashboard or on your store’s admin pages, it means your version of WooCommerce is outdated and no longer supported by the latest version of the Stripe Payment Gateway plugin.
Stripe requires WooCommerce 9.9 or greater to be installed and active. WooCommerce 9.8.5 is no longer supported.

Why you’re seeing this message
The Stripe for WooCommerce plugin depends on new features and security updates included in WooCommerce 9.9 or higher. If your website is still running WooCommerce 9.8.5 or earlier, the Stripe plugin cannot function correctly and will display this compatibility warning.
Fixing the issue — update WooCommerce
To fix the message, you’ll need to update your WooCommerce plugin to version 9.9 or newer. Updating WooCommerce can be a significant change so we recommend testing the update on a staging site before updating your live production website.
Step 1: Create a staging site to test updates safely
Before updating your live store, it’s important to test the updates on a staging version of your website.
This helps you confirm that your theme, plugins, and payment gateway all work correctly after the upgrade.
Follow this guide to create a staging version of your site:
How to create a staging WordPress site
Once your staging site is ready:
- Log in to the staging WordPress Dashboard.
- Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Find WooCommerce and click Update now.
- Test your checkout and Stripe payment flow thoroughly.
If everything works as expected, you can safely apply the updates to your live website.
If you don’t see the Update button next to WooCommerce, it usually means your WordPress version is too old. WooCommerce 9.9 requires WordPress 6.7 or greater.
- Go to Dashboard > Updates in your WordPress staging site.
- Check your current WordPress version.
- If it’s lower than 6.7, click Update Now to install the latest WordPress core version.
Once WordPress is up to date, the option to update WooCommerce should become available.
If your staging site isn’t working correctly, check for any errors — it’s often caused by an outdated theme or plugin that needs updating or replacing.

Step 2: Update your live website
Before updating your live site, always create a full snapshot backup. This allows you to restore your site quickly if anything goes wrong.
Follow this guide to create a snapshot backup: How to create a snapshot backup in JetBackup
Once your backup is complete, you’re ready to proceed.
- Log in to your live WordPress Dashboard.
- Go to Dashboard > Updates.
- Click Update Now to update WordPress (if needed).
- Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Find WooCommerce and click Update now.
Wait for the update to complete – do not close your browser until it finishes.
Once updated, WooCommerce will be compatible with the latest version of Stripe, and the error message will disappear.
Step 3: Test your store
After updating:
- Visit your shop and checkout pages to confirm everything loads correctly.
- Place a test order using Stripe to ensure payments process successfully.
- Check your WooCommerce and Stripe plugin dashboards for any errors or new setup notices.
Summary
