How to Easily Update PHP for WordPress: A Step-by-Step Guide for Ecenica Users

Keeping your WordPress site up to date is essential, not just for new features, but for performance, security, and plugin compatibility. However, many modern WordPress plugins and themes require newer PHP versions to work properly. If you’re hosted with Ecenica, updating your PHP version is simple and can unlock the ability to update your WordPress site safely and effectively.

Why Updating PHP Matters for WordPress

As of October 2025, WordPress recommends using PHP 8.3 or higher. Using outdated versions can lead to:

  • Incompatibility with newer WordPress versions and plugins
  • Security vulnerabilities
  • Slower website performance
  • Broken or deprecated theme/plugin functions

How to Change Your PHP Version on Ecenica

Ecenica makes it easy to manage your PHP version. Here’s how:

  1. Log in to cPanel. See Where do I login to my hosting control panel
  2. Click Select PHP Version
  3. Select the PHP version you want to use (e.g., PHP 8.4 or 8.3). We recommend matching the version of PHP required by the latest WordPress core and your WordPress plugins and Theme
  4. Click Set as current to apply the new PHP version.

See our guide on enabling PHP 8.4

Use a Staging Clone to Test Safely

Before making any changes on your live site, we strongly recommend creating a staging clone of your WordPress site. A staging site is a private copy of your site where you can:

  • Safely test newer PHP versions
  • Check plugin and theme compatibility
  • Make updates without impacting your live visitors

Ecenica customers can use WordPress Manager to create a staging copy of their site.

Once the staging site is created you can set the staging site web directory to use a newer PHP version and test your site without affecting your live website.

What to Do After Updating PHP

Once your PHP version is updated and tested:

  1. Backup Your Live Site
Always take a snapshot backup before major updates.

  2. Update WordPress Core
In the WordPress dashboard under Dashboard → Updates, click Update Now.

  3. Update Plugins and Themes
Select all out-of-date plugins and themes and update them directly from the same section.

  4. Test Functionality
Review your website’s frontend, admin dashboard and PHP error logs to confirm everything works smoothly.
