How to run a traceroute on Mac OS X

Step 1 — Open Terminal

  1. Press Cmd + Space to open Spotlight
  2. Type Terminal
  3. Click Terminal in the results

Or (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)

Step 2 — Type the Command

In the Terminal window, type the following and press Enter:

traceroute ecenica.com

Step 3 — Wait for It to Finish

The traceroute will run through up to 30 hops. Each line represents a server your connection passes through on the way to the destination. This can take 1–2 minutes.

Step 4 — Read the Results

Each line looks something like this:

  5    12 ms   11 ms   12 ms   192.168.1.1
Part What it means
5 Hop number — the step in the journey
12 ms 11 ms 12 ms Response times — lower is better
192.168.1.1 The server at that hop
* * * That hop didn’t respond — this is normal for some servers

Step 5 — Copy the Results

  1. Click anywhere in the Terminal window
  2. Press Cmd + A to select all
  3. Press Cmd + C to copy
  4. Paste into an email or support ticket
