How to Run a Traceroute on Windows

Step 1 — Open Command Prompt

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard
  2. Type cmd
  3. Click Command Prompt in the results

Step 2 — Type the Command

In the Command Prompt window, type the following and press Enter:

tracert ecenica.com

Step 3 — Wait for It to Finish

The traceroute will run through up to 30 hops. Each line represents a server your connection passes through on the way to the destination. This can take 1–2 minutes.

Step 4 — Read the Results

Each line looks something like this:

  5 12 ms 11 ms 12 ms 192.168.1.1
Part What it means
5 Hop number — the step in the journey
12 ms 11 ms 12 ms Response times — lower is better
192.168.1.1 The server at that hop
* * * That hop didn’t respond — this is normal for some servers

Step 5 — Copy the Results

  1. Right-click anywhere in the Command Prompt window
  2. Choose Select All
  3. Right-click again and choose Copy
  4. Paste into an email or support ticket
