Why you should remove the WP-SpamShield plugin from your WordPress website

If your WordPress website still has the WP-SpamShield plugin installed, we recommend removing it immediately.
WP-SpamShield is no longer maintained and has known compatibility issues with current versions of WordPress.

What is WP-SpamShield?

WP-SpamShield was a popular WordPress plugin that provided spam protection for comments, contact forms, and registration forms.

It worked by filtering automated spam submissions using JavaScript and server-side validation.

When it was actively developed, WP-SpamShield was an effective anti-spam tool used on thousands of WordPress sites.

Why you should remove WP-SpamShield

The WP-SpamShield plugin has been abandoned by its developer and is no longer supported or updated.
It was removed from the official WordPress Plugin Directory in 2017, meaning it no longer receives:

  • Security updates
  • Bug fixes
  • Compatibility improvements** for newer versions of WordPress or PHP

Risks of keeping WP-SpamShield installed

Keeping WP-SpamShield active can cause a range of issues, including:

  • Website errors – the plugin is incompatible with the latest versions of WordPress (6.x+) and PHP 8.x, which can cause fatal errors or blank pages.
  • Broken forms or comments – WP-SpamShield can block legitimate users from submitting forms or comments.
  • Security vulnerabilities – unmaintained plugins can expose your website to attack.
  • Conflict with other plugins – modern anti-spam tools and contact form plugins often conflict with WP-SpamShield’s outdated code.

For these reasons, it’s strongly advised to remove WP-SpamShield completely from your site.

How to safely remove WP-SpamShield

  1. Log in to your WordPress Dashboard.
  2. Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
  3. Find WP-SpamShield Anti-Spam.
  4. Click Deactivate.
  5. Once deactivated, click Delete to remove it from your site.

If you manage multiple WordPress installations, repeat these steps for each site.

Before deleting any plugin, we recommend taking a snapshot backup using JetBackup, included with your Ecenica WordPress Hosting. See How to Create a Snapshot Backup in JetBackup
