Fix “Message not downloaded from the server” on iPhone

The “Message not downloaded from the server” error typically indicates a problem on the phone itself rather than an issue with the email server. This error occurs when the Mail app on the iPhone is unable to retrieve the full content of an email from the server. While this could be related to network connectivity or server-side issues, it’s often due to the device not syncing or fetching new messages properly.

Possible causes include:

  • Poor or intermittent internet connection, which prevents emails from being fully downloaded.
  • App glitches, such as when the Mail app fails to sync or retrieve email content due to settings or temporary issues.
  • Misconfigurations in Mail settings, such as preview or fetch settings, preventing proper syncing.

By following the troubleshooting steps outlined above, most of these issues can be resolved, allowing the email to download properly.

1. Check Internet Connectivity

  • Ensure you’re connected to a stable Wi-Fi or cellular network.
  • If the connection is weak, switch networks or restart your router.
  • Toggle Airplane Mode to reset your network connection.

2. Restart the Mail App

  • Close the Mail app completely:
    • Swipe up from the bottom (or double-press the Home button on older iPhones) to open the app switcher.
    • Swipe the Mail app off the screen to close it.
  • Reopen the Mail app.

3. Change Mail Preview Settings

  • Go to Settings > Mail > Preview.
  • Set it to 5 Lines to ensure more of the message is downloaded during sync.

4. Enable Mail Fetch More Frequently

  • Go to Settings > Mail > Email Accounts > Fetch New Data.
  • Ensure Push is enabled.
  • Under the “Fetch” section, try setting the schedule to Every 15 Minutes or Manually for better syncing.

5. Check Available Storage Space

  • Insufficient free space on your iPhone can prevent emails from downloading.
  1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Review your available space.
  3. If storage is low, delete unused apps, photos, or videos to free up space.

6. Remove and Re-add the Email Account

  1. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
  2. Select your email account and tap Delete Account.
  3. Restart your iPhone.
  4. Re-add the account under Add Account using your email credentials.

Tip: Use the IMAP settings available in Ecenica Dashboard for easy setup.

7. Restart the iPhone

  • For iPhones with Face ID: Press and hold the Side Button + Volume Down until the power-off slider appears.
  • For iPhones with a Home Button: Press and hold the Power Button until the slider appears.
  • Slide to power off, then turn the device back on.

8. Access via Webmail or Other Email Clients

  • Log in to your email account via Ecenica Webmail.
  • Verify if the email is intact on the server. If it displays in Ecenica Webmail, the issue is likely with the iPhone Mail app.
  • Alternatively, try accessing your email on another device or app, such as:
    • Thunderbird (Windows/macOS)
    • Microsoft Outlook
    • Gmail (Android/iOS)

Tip: Use the IMAP settings available in Ecenica Dashboard for easy setup.

9. Update iOS Software

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Install the latest iOS update, as it may resolve any Mail app bugs.
