How to Fix Email Rejection Issues Caused by Full Forwarded Inboxes

If you’re seeing bounce-back messages when sending emails to an address with a forwarder configured, the issue may be related to the recipient’s inbox reaching its storage limit. Here’s an example scenario and how you can resolve it:

Scenario

Emails sent to a forwarding address (e.g., your-email@yourdomain.com), which are forwarded to a Gmail account (e.g., recipient@gmail.com), are being rejected. The rejection message indicates that the Gmail inbox is full:

452-4.2.2 The recipient's inbox is out of storage space. Please direct the
452-4.2.2 recipient to
452 4.2.2 https://support.google.com/mail/?p=OverQuotaTemp

Additionally, delayed delivery warnings from the mail server may also occur if the destination inbox remains inaccessible for extended periods.

Why This Happens

When emails are forwarded, the forwarding server acts as an intermediary between the sender and the recipient’s email provider (e.g., Gmail). If the destination inbox is full, Gmail rejects the forwarded emails. Over time, these undelivered messages may generate warning notifications about delivery delays.

How to Fix It

To resolve this issue, you can either:

  1. Free Up Space in the Gmail Inbox: The recipient can delete unnecessary emails or increase storage by upgrading their Google account.

  2. Remove the Email Forwarder: If the forwarding setup is no longer needed, you can remove the forwarder entirely.

If you need assistance with removing the email forwarder or freeing up inbox space, please feel free to contact our support team.
