How to Downgrade WooCommerce to an Older Version

If a WooCommerce update causes issues with your website, you can manually reinstall a previous version of the plugin.

Important Before Downgrading

WooCommerce data is stored in the database

Your products, orders, customers, and settings are stored in the WordPress database, not inside the plugin files.

Removing or replacing the plugin does not normally delete store data.

Database compatibility risk

WooCommerce updates can change database structure.

If your database has already been upgraded, simply installing an older plugin version can cause:

  • Critical site errors
  • Broken checkout flow
  • Missing or incompatible features
  • Plugin conflicts

In some cases, you may also need to restore a database backup from the same period the older version was running.

Recommended best practice

Before making any changes:

  • Take a full website + database backup
  • Test on a staging site if available
  • Confirm theme and payment plugins support the target WooCommerce version

Option 1: Downgrade via WordPress Admin (Recommended)

  1. Download the required WooCommerce version from the release archive.
  2. Log into WordPress admin.
  3. Go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  4. Click Upload Plugin.
  5. Select the WooCommerce ZIP file.
  6. Click Install Now.
  7. When prompted, choose “Replace current with uploaded”.
  8. Activate the plugin if required.

Option 2: Downgrade via cPanel File Manager

Step 1: Open File Manager

  1. Log into cPanel.
  2. Open File Manager.
  3. Navigate to:
    public_html/wp-content/plugins/

Step 2: Backup existing plugin folder

  1. Locate the folder: woocommerce
  2. Rename it to: woocommerce-old

Step 3: Upload and extract older version

  1. Download the required WooCommerce ZIP file.
  2. Upload it via File Manager.
  3. Select the ZIP file.
  4. Click Extract.
  5. Ensure the folder is named: woocommerce

Step 4: Verify site

  1. Check frontend loads correctly.
  2. Test checkout process.
  3. Confirm payment gateways.
  4. Check WordPress admin access.

Backup & Restore Options

Reliable backups are essential when working with WooCommerce updates.

We provide simple backup and restore functionality across many Ecenica hosting plans, allowing quick recovery if an update causes issues.

Backup and restore is also available as an optional add-on for our Ecenica VPS hosting, offering additional protection and recovery flexibility for more complex or high-traffic environments.

If issues persist

If problems continue after downgrading, you may need to restore a full database backup from the time the previous WooCommerce version was in use.
