This error message means your WordPress website is running a version of PHP older than 8.3, but one or more of its Composer packages require PHP 8.3 or later. WordPress shows a critical error because it cannot load the required code. You can usually fix this by changing the PHP version for your Ecenica hosting service to a newer version of PHP
Check the PHP version your website needs
The error says the required version is >= 8.3.0. This means PHP 8.3 or newer is needed. Your theme or plugins may also have their own PHP requirements, so check compatibility before changing the version.
Change the PHP version
- Log in to the Ecenica Dashboard.
- Open the hosting service for the affected website.
- Select Select PHP Version.
- Make a note of the current PHP version so you can restore it if needed.
- Choose PHP 8.3 or a newer version that your WordPress theme and plugins support.
- Click Apply.
The change usually takes effect straight away. Open your website again to check whether it loads.
If the error continues
Check the PHP version used by the website
If you can access WordPress, go to Tools > Site Health > Info and look for the PHP version under Server. If you cannot access WordPress, check the version selected for the hosting service in the Dashboard.
Check Composer’s PHP version
If the error appeared after a developer ran Composer, the command line may use a different PHP version from the one serving your website. Ask your developer to check the PHP version used by Composer and confirm it meets the project’s requirement.
Check your theme and plugins
A theme or plugin may not support the PHP version you selected. If the website shows another error after the change, restore the previous PHP version and ask your developer to check the affected code.
Ask your developer to review the Composer requirements
If you cannot change PHP or the error remains, ask your developer to check the project’s composer.json file and identify which package requires PHP 8.3. Do not remove or change dependencies unless your developer confirms that doing so is safe.
If you’re hosted with Ecenica, you can also contact Ecenica support. Include the exact error message and the PHP version selected for your hosting service.
