Choosing the right PHP version keeps your WordPress site fast and secure. We recommend PHP 8.4 as the default for most sites, but your WordPress version and plugins may affect which version works best.
Recommended PHP versions (September 2026)
| WordPress version | PHP 8.5 | PHP 8.4 | PHP 8.3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7.1 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 7.0 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 6.9 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 6.8 | No | Yes | Yes |
Yes means the PHP version is fully supported by that WordPress version. No means it isn’t. You’ll likely run into errors or broken features running unsupported PHP versions.
PHP 8.5
PHP 8.5 is the newest version. WordPress 7.0 and later support it fully. WordPress 6.9 added support when it launched in December 2025.
PHP 8.5 brings performance improvements and new language features. If your plugins and themes work with it, it’s a good choice. Read more about the speed improvements in PHP 8.5 Now Available: Faster WordPress, Stronger Security.
PHP 8.4
PHP 8.4 is fully supported by WordPress 6.9 and later. WordPress 6.7 added initial support in November 2024.
PHP 8.4 is our default PHP version. It’s a solid, well-tested option for most WordPress sites.
PHP 8.3
PHP 8.3 is fully supported by WordPress 6.6 and later. It’s a reliable option if you need it for compatibility reasons.
Check plugin compatibility first
Before changing your PHP version, check that your plugins and themes support it. An incompatible plugin can break your site.
- Open your WordPress dashboard
- Go to Plugins and check each plugin’s “Tested up tov field
- Visit each plugin’s page on wordpress.org/plugins and look at the “Requires PHP” field
- If any plugin lists a maximum PHP version lower than your target, update the plugin first or contact the developer
Do the same for your active theme. Go to Appearance > Themes, click your active theme, and check the details.
How to change your PHP version on Ecenica

Changes take effect immediately. If your site breaks after switching, revert to the previous version using the same steps.
Minimum supported versions
WordPress requires PHP 7.4 or higher. Versions below 7.4 reached end of life and no longer receive security updates from the PHP project. Running an unsupported PHP version puts your site at risk.
If your site still runs PHP 7.3 or older, upgrade as soon as possible. Most modern plugins and themes no longer support these versions.
Ecenica HardenedPHP security protection
If a plugin or theme forces you to stay on an older PHP version, you’re still protected on Ecenica hosting. We use HardenedPHP, which backports critical security patches to older PHP versions, even ones that have reached end of life.
This means if you’re running PHP 8.2, 8.1, 8.0, or even 7.4 due to compatibility requirements, we apply the same security fixes that newer PHP versions receive. You don’t need to do anything as HardenedPHP runs automatically on all our hosting plans.
Frequently asked questions
What PHP version should I use?
PHP 8.4 is our default and the best choice for most WordPress sites in September 2026. It’s fully supported, widely tested, and compatible with most plugins. Use PHP 8.5 if all your plugins support it.
Will changing my PHP version break my site?
It can if a plugin or theme isn’t compatible. Always check compatibility before switching. If something goes wrong, switch back to your previous version in the dashboard.
Where do I see my current PHP version?
Log in to your WordPress dashboard. Go to Tools > Site Health and click the Info tab. Look for the Server section to see your PHP version.
What happens if I don’t update PHP?
Nothing immediately. But unsupported PHP versions don’t receive security patches from the PHP project. On Ecenica hosting, our HardenedPHP protection backports critical security patches to older versions, so you’re still covered.
