You can set Ecenica Webmail to request a read receipt automatically for outgoing emails. This article explains how to enable the setting, turn it off and understand why a receipt might not arrive.
A read receipt, also called a return receipt, is a notification sent back by the recipient’s email app. Whether you receive one depends on the app’s settings and the recipient’s choice.
Before you start
You’ll need the full email address and password for the mailbox you want to update. Sign in to that mailbox before changing its preferences.
These instructions apply to messages you compose in Ecenica Webmail. If you send emails from Outlook, Apple Mail or another email app, check that app’s receipt settings separately.
Enable read receipts
- Log in to Ecenica Webmail.
- Open your inbox if a webmail welcome page appears.
- Click Settings.
- Select Preferences, if shown.
- Click Composing Messages.
- Turn on Always request a return receipt.
- Click Save.
New messages you compose will request a read receipt by default. This setting adds a request to your email; it cannot make the recipient return a receipt.
To check the preference has saved, reopen Composing Messages and confirm Always request a return receipt is enabled.
Turn off automatic read receipt requests
- Open Settings.
- Select Preferences, if shown.
- Click Composing Messages.
- Turn off Always request a return receipt.
- Click Save.
This changes the default for future messages. It does not withdraw requests included in emails you have already sent.
Troubleshooting
The setting does not stay enabled
Return to Composing Messages, enable the option and click Save before leaving the page.
You cannot find the setting
Check Composing Messages under Settings, rather than Mailbox View. If a Preferences menu appears, open it first.
No receipt arrives
The recipient may decline the request, have receipts disabled or use an email app that does not support them. A missing receipt does not mean your email is unread.
Frequently asked questions
Does a read receipt prove someone has read my email?
No. A receipt can be generated without the person reading the message, and an email can be read without a receipt being returned.
Can I request a receipt for one message only?
Yes. Enable Return receipt in the message’s sending options before sending it.
Is a read receipt the same as a delivery notification?
No. A delivery notification reports delivery status from the mail system; it does not confirm that someone has read the email.
Does this control receipts I send to other people?
No. Your response to incoming receipt requests is controlled separately by Request for receipts under Settings > Preferences > Mailbox View.
